Tour's starting place
This is an exhilirating Fat Biking adventure through the heart of Lithuania's beautiful Lake District.
Explore hidden forests and woodlands that are rarely visited, cycle around picturesque lakes and go off-road testing your limits deep into some of the country's most remote and wild nature spots.
By night, rest up with a hearty dinner and a sauna in your cosy guesthouse and toast the day's adventures.
Riding a fat bike instead of a regular mountain bike allows you to get through otherwise impassable woodland areas, such as swamps and muddy off-road. You'll be able to explore many of the secret forest areas, that not many people can get to easily. However, low pressure in the bike's tires also means that riding such bike is physically demanding.
Day 1. Arrival Arrival to Visaginas and a transfer to a cosy guesthouse in Gražutės Regional Park, short introductory fatbike ride in the evening, dinner.
Day 2. Cycling 38 km We start our day with some light morning exercise, followed by delicious breakfast. After breakfast we set off on a cycling tour around nearby lakes – Trilypis, Skaidrys, and Švento. All of these lakes are part of Smalvo conservation area, which was designed to protect some of the rarest species of birds and plants in Lithuania.
The nature here is dominated by pines, green mosses, and picturesque lakes formed following the Ice Age. There will be a stop for some rest and a lunch over an open fire halfway through the route. This is also a perfect opportunity to test the open lake waters and enjoy a refreshing swim in hot weather.
After the stop we'll continue our way following a number of picturesque lakes and a river Šventoji. Some hills and wetland areas will be present, adding a bit of spice and action to our journey. Arriving at the guesthouse closer to the evening. Dinner and rest.
Day 3. Cycling 40 km Greeting the morning with light exercise and yummy breakfast. Today we'll cycle alongside Antalieptės reservoir. The reservoir is made up from 26 lakes, which were artificially joined together to form a single lake, powering up a hydroelectric power station at Antalieptė. The reservoir is full of little islands, majority of which are a natural habitat for variety of bird species.
The route will run through Salakas village, where you'll get an opportunity to visit Gražutės Regional park visitor centre, including an ethnographic exhibition of the Salakas region, an exhibition about the Regional Park's natural environment and a Sea Museum. This is also a perfect timing to enjoy your packed lunch.
After lunch we pedal en-route to Aukštaitijos National Park and arrive to a traditional guesthouse in the evening. Now it's time for dinner, sauna and rest.
Day 4. Cycling 35 km In the morning after breakfast we cycle to the Ginučiai water mill through the vast park's area - passing by numerous lakes and through the forest. Lunch break at Ginučiai. Then stopping at Ladakalnis, a pagan worship hill with a stunning view of 6 different lakes. Legends say that sacrifices to the Balts' goddess of life Lada were made on top of this hill.
We then cycle through some of the wildest parts of Aukštaitijos National park, while learning more about the legends and stories connecting us with the natural sights we pass by, such as fresh water stream and dark small lakes Laumiakys and Laumekelis.
Upon arrival at a final guesthouse in Palūšė village, we enjoy delicious dinner, optional sauna and share our final tour experiences with each other.
